Week of Activities Highlighted by Jimmie Johnson’s Visit to San Diego Area School
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (June 21, 2012) – The Seventh Annual Jimmie Johnson Foundation Golf Tournament and Dinner Auction presented by Lowe’s raised more than $600,000. Proceeds from the tournament will be distributed to schools in need through the Jimmie Johnson Foundation/Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Champions Grants program.
“I’m always blown away by the support for the golf tournament from our partners, friends and fans,” said Johnson, who grew up in El Cajon, Calif. “I love coming back to my hometown and am just happy we can help make a difference where I grew up.”
Johnson and his wife Chandra hosted more than 100 golfers at The Grand Del Mar in San Diego. A dinner and live auction were held Wednesday evening. NASCAR driver Casey Mears, seven-time SuperCross champion Jeremy McGrath and former NFL star Jason Sehorn attended the events.
The highlight of week came Tuesday when Johnson, his wife, Chandra, and daughter, Genevieve, visited Chase Avenue Elementary School in El Cajon, Calif. The school was the recipient of a 2010 grant andused the funds awarded to build a track and outdoor area at the school. Johnson ran with students who comprise the school’s newly formed running club and with help from Lowe’s, donated trees to help with landscaping needs.
The tournament, which in seven years has raised more than $3.5 million, focuses on the Champions Grants program, a partnership between the Jimmie Johnson Foundation and Lowe’s Toolbox for Education. The grants range from $25,000-$100,000 and are distributed to K-12 public schools in the Johnson’s hometowns in Oklahoma and California, and where they currently reside in North Carolina.
